Senna signs for Williams to partner Maldonado

Bruno Senna signs to race for Williams in 2012.

Bruno Senna, the nephew of the late three time World Champion Ayrton Senna, will be in Formula One in 2012 after Williams signed him up to race for them. Senna, who took part in eight Grands Prix for Renault in 2011, signs a deal which sees him partner Pastor Maldonado for the famous Williams name.

The Brazilian will be racing for the team at which his Uncle tragically was killed, in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Senna spoke of continuing the famous Senna name as he stated: "It's something that's been present for me since my first race, and I have learned how to deal with the memories I bring of Ayrton. It's very good for me to bring back memories of Ayrton in people. People are very fond of Ayrton and I am in no way trying to take his spotlight. It brings me a great feeling, and I'm sure it's going to be more special every day." Senna drove almost a full season in 2010 for Hispania, as well as eight races in 2011 for Renault. He drove some excellent qualifying laps, with seventh in Belgium, and ninth in Brazil, but struggled in the races, with just two points, coming at Monza.

Williams' 2011 was a disaster
Williams had their worst ever season in 2011, with both Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado having lacklustre seasons. The car was slow and unreliable, and the former legends of the sport struggled to get their drivers into Q2. Just five points and ninth place in the Constructor's Championship was certainly a huge disappointment. Senna was picked for the seat ahead of countryman Rubens Barrichello, the most experienced driver of all time, who is looking out of the sport after nineteen seasons. He had a disappointing 2011, and now it is almost certain that his Formula One career will end with a fourteenth place at Brazil in November.

Just one free seat is now available, alongside Pedro de la Rosa at HRT. Jarno Trulli's seat at Caterham is thought to maybe be insecure also.
