The second session of pre-season testing begins today, with four days of running at the Circuit de Catalunya, host of the Spanish Grand Prix. The Barcelona test - the first of two to be held at the Spanish Grand Prix venue before the teams fly out to Australia for the March 18 first race - will see teams begin to focus on the performance and set-up of their new machines after predominantly using the four days at Jerez for reliability and data-gathering work. The test is a four day session, running from 21st to 24th February.
Eleven of the twelve teams are at Barcelona this week, with only HRT absent. HRT, who ran their 2011 car in the Jerez test, will not use their 2012 car until the third and final testing session, also at Barcelona. Marussia weren't at the Jerez test with either their 2011 or 2012 car, but will be using their 2011 car over the four days at Barcelona. Mercedes used their 2011 car in Jerez, and will be launching their 2012 challenger, named the W03, tomorrow morning before testing starts. The car has had a shakedown at Silverstone earlier this week, as well as a private testing day yesterday. New Caterham driver Vitaly Petrov will be running on Wednesday and Thursday, as he tries to understand the CT01 car. At Williams, test driver Valtteri Bottas will have a full day of running, the GP3 champion in the car on Wednesday. Rookie Charles Pic will make his testing debut, with three days in the Marussia 2011 car.
