We've seen some excellent overtaking moves this season, and here's a small selection of them. These aren't in any particular order, just a compilation of brilliant moves. Many have said that DRS and KERS have eliminated great overtakes, but from this compilation of twenty one moves, you'll see that's not the case.
FELIPE MASSA ON NICO ROSBERG, MONACO
A very oppurtunistic move from Massa, he gets a better exit than Rosberg out of the corner, he dives up alongside Rosberg, surprsing the Mercedes driver, and comfortably takes sixth place with a great move.
Some would say this was just a good start, but this was one of the best pieces of driving all season. Alonso brilliantly uses all of his KERS at the start and just look at his clever slipstreaming and beautiful moving from left to right, after starting fourth.
This move wasn't because of the DRS, KERS, Tyre Differential, Webber running wide or Button's straight line speed. This was simply Button's determination, and what a ballsy move, going onto the wet line and somehow stopping the back end from kicking out - a fabulous overtake.
This is a brilliant move in the season opener - incredibly high speed, and it took a lot of guts from Alonso to go on the outside of Kobayashi, another brilliant move from the Spanish genius.
NICK HEIDFELD ON SERGIO PEREZ, EUROPE
A move that very few people saw due to the fact that it wasn't for a points paying position - but what a move from Heidfeld. Round the outside of the chicane - this is brilliant.
SEBASTIAN VETTEL ON FERNANDO ALONSO, ITALY
In my opinion the move of the season: Two of the best drivers in the world battling for the lead. Alonso makes it very difficult for Vettel, but the German takes it in an audacious move.
JENSON BUTTON ON FELIPE MASSA, GREAT BRITAIN
Massa forces Button wide and almost onto the grass, but Button is more determined and makes it past even with a lock up of his McLaren.
LEWIS HAMILTON ON FERNANDO ALONSO, GERMANY
Admittedly Alonso ran wide into Turn One, making it easier for Hamilton, but this was a great overtake. Around the outside of someone very hard to overtake, this is classic Hamilton.
FERNANDO ALONSO ON MARK WEBBER, EUROPE
Entering the DRS Zone, Alonso was nowhere near Webber, but his fantastic movement and a daring move on the brakes send the home fans wild as he takes 2nd place.
RUBENS BARRICHELLO ON MICHAEL SCHUMACHER, MONACO
This is such a daring pass, and Barrichello knew he had to get this absolutely right. He puts a beautiful move up the inside of his old rival, in one of the best moves of the season.
LEWIS HAMILTON ON JENSON BUTTON, CHINA
It could not be more difficult to go up the inside here, they enter the corner extraordinarily close, and Hamilton muscles his way past his team mate, and this has to be one of his best ever overtakes.
FERNANDO ALONSO ON JENSON BUTTON, BRAZIL
Another brilliant move from Alonso, somehow going on the outside of a corner that most struggle to pass on the inside. He totally surprises Button, and this was an absolutely outstanding pass.
MARK WEBBER ON FERNANDO ALONSO, BELGIUM
Up Eau Rouge, what a move. This is one you just don't expect, and if he had got it an inch wrong, both would have been out of the race. Brilliant stuff from Mark Webber.
MARK WEBBER ON FERNANDO ALONSO, SINGAPORE
Again, Mark Webber on Fernando Alonso. These two had a magnetic attraction this season, and this is a wonderful pass, very very oppurtunistic into the Singapore sling chicane.
MICHAEL SCHUMACHER ON FELIPE MASSA/KAMUI KOBAYASHI, CANADA
A flash of the old Schumacher here as he notices Kobayashi run wide, and decides he fancies both Kobayashi and Massa in the the hairpin. A very impressive move from the German.
SEBASTIAN VETTEL ON NICO ROSBERG, BELGIUMMany said this year that one of Vettel's flaws was that he couldn't overtake, but he silenced his critics here with a stunning move on Rosberg on the outside of Blanchimont.
FERNANDO ALONSO ON SEBASTIAN VETTEL, GERMANY
Yet another great move from the Spaniard: Here he nails Vettel up the inside of Turn One for third place, in an impressive overtake.
Halfway through this video we see another flash of the Schumacher of old, putting a brave move on Hamilton up the inside of Loews hairpin.
Overtaking two cars at once is hard enough; overtaking two cars at once on a track very difficult to pass on is something special, and this is great work from Kobayashi.
Webber on Alonso again here. A great battle down the straight, and they are very close into the corners. Just look at how the back end kicks out of Webber's car on the penultimate corner as he takes second place.
The only memorable move from the European Grand Prix outside of the DRS Zone. Button gets a better run than Rosberg out of Turn One, and nails him into the next corner for sixth place.
THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY
These just missed out...
- Lewis Hamilton on Alonso (Britain), on Vettel (China)
- Sebastian Vettel on Hamilton (Korea) and on Button (Spain)
- Adrian Sutil on Kobayashi (Japan)
- Fernando Alonso on Vettel, Hamilton and Button (Italy start)
What was your favourite of these twenty one? Maybe you had another favourite that wasn't mentioned here? Please leave your thoughts in the comments, and I hope you enjoyed the videos.

Bit of an Alonso bias here?
ReplyDeleteHis one on Vettel in Germany was just standard late breaking, which we saw a lot in that race...the first corner is designed for that to happen.
In terms of the best, I'd say for sheer opportunism would be Schumi on Kobayashi and Massa in Canada, but skill/bravery, of course, Webber on Alonso in Spa.
I don't think there's an Alonso bias, yes there are a lot of his moves, but also note the amount of moves ON Alonso here. (I even stated that I think a move on Alonso was the best.)
ReplyDeleteAlso, thanks for commenting, and please vote in the poll on the sidebar for your move of the season :)
So, Sebastian Vettel's overtake on Fernando Alonso at Monza won the overtake of the year. Mark Webber's move on Alonso at Belgium was a close 2nd, while Alonso's start at Spain was 3rd. Thanks for voting everyone.
